It’s really exciting to be heading into another ICC tournament with the eyes of the world on us and our performances. It’s a chance for us all to impress and be noticed.
We have India and Ireland in our group and our target going into the event is to get to the second round and play all the big teams. In Twenty20 anything can happen and as we showed at the last World Cup we are capable of beating big teams. If we can do it again, that would be nice.
After we beat India at the 2007 World Cup, and also enjoying other encouraging results since then, all of our players believe that we can win against any team – including India.
In the warm-up matches we did well and took some confidence from there. Against Australia we batted really well and against Sri Lanka we gave them a tough time and made it close. So we can take these positives into the tournament.
It will be interesting to measure up against India as they are now very used to Twenty20 having played the IPL for two years now. On a personal level it is such a good opportunity for me to bowl against great batsmen like Virender Sehwag and Yuvraj Singh – but I always enjoy such challenges, no matter who we play.
It will also be good to play against India because they have the biggest cricket industry and sponsors in the world, so it is a good chance for you to show your ability to the world. It is a chance to improve your profile.
The last six months have been excellent for me with everything going so well, at batting, bowling and fielding. I am enjoying every moment and becoming the ICC No.1-ranked all-rounder in one-day internationals was a real boost.
I had mixed feelings. I didn’t realise I was that close (to the top). I just enjoy my cricket and each time I go out on to the field I try to improve myself. I never thought ‘I am better than Flintoff or Kallis’ – I just play my cricket.
More fame has come my way with these kind of things happening and I can honestly say I didn’t plan for this, I just wanted to play cricket and enjoy my life. I like the fame though. After I scored 92 to help us beat Sri Lanka I had 1,000 missed calls and 700 SMS messages on my mobile phone!
But, having achieved what I have at this stage, I want to be one of the best cricketers in the world – in Tests, 50-over and T20. I also have ambitions for my team as well, I want to see them in the top three in the world.
People have said I am a batsman that bowls but I have always liked to think as a cricketer who has all the skills, not just a batsman who bowls or the other way round.
It is true to say that before I took seven wickets in an innings against New Zealand last year I wasn’t thought of as a main bowler for Bangladesh. Before then I wasn’t a regular spinner in Tests but since then I became a front-line spinner and have regularly taken five wickets. That match was a turnaround for my bowling.
